Improvisation trio The Selfkickers was born from an electrifying fascination with poet Johnny van Doorn. The driving force behind this project is Joske Koning, actress and vocalist, who in a previous formation gave theatrical-musical performances of Johnny’s poems.
The name The Selfkickers comes from one of Johnny’s nicknames, “The Selfkicker.” Playfully, it evokes references to adrenaline-fueled kicks on “the self,” the experience of an intense moment, and an unpredictably leaping frog. The Selfkickers is plural, and thus a contradiction in itself: kicking on the self as a collective manifestation.

Van Doorn's poetry lends itself extremely well to improvised music because of its almost hallucinogenic surrender to language which abandons all linear logic."
